Mechanical Engineer – Sustainability

The New York City School Construction Authority (NYCSCA) builds and renovates public schools throughout all of the boroughs. SCA’s Sustainable Design and Resiliency team is looking for a highly motivated Mechanical Engineer that has experience in sustainable design and energy efficiency who is responsible for performing work in a variety of assignments and technical roles, as needed, to achieve the objectives of the Authority. The Sustainable Design and Resiliency team is responsible for updating and implementing the NYC Green Schools Guide Rating System, research and development of standards due to enactment of sustainable laws and incorporation of technology and revisions to the SCA standards as they relate to sustainability and resiliency requirements at the local, state, and federal level that go beyond building energy codes.


Responsibilities Include:
Assists A&E as the Sustainable Design and Resiliency Project Engineer on existing building electrification retrofits and other mechanical HVAC related scope. Manages technical resources, guides interdisciplinary teams; participates in the development of the technical resources required to properly include sustainable design and resiliency scope and design to projects. Performs energy modeling and mechanical engineering calculations; assists in reviews of project Energy modeling and the development of standards. Ensures Sustainability Consultant’s adherence to the schedule, budget, and/or standards. Attends Capacity & Technical Discipline meetings; research new materials and products to align with agency and departmental goals. Review Design Requirements and other Standards for updates and coordination. Leads interagency work to improve/update/reconsider sustainability and resiliency regulatory requirements. Assists in the implementation of the Green Schools Guide process. Assess completeness of submittals; collaborate and assist design team in the Green School Guide Submission to ensure that project is completed on time and on budget and in compliance. Notify the Sustainable Design Manager of project status, issues that may impact the scope of work, schedules, or magnitude projects.
Chairs or participates in research studies, including various meetings. Learn decarbonization, electrification, and resilient mechanical design technologies. Review of scope of work documents and design documents for existing building electrification projects. Review on-going construction of existing building electrifications projects. Assists in preparing new design standards and procedures.

Minimum Qualifications:
MUST POSSESS A CURRENT AND VALID NYS PROFESSIONAL ENGINEER LICENSE
Baccalaureate degree plus six years of full-time paid post-licensure experience as a Professional Engineer; three years must be as a project engineer; project, team, or squad leader; or a comparable level of responsibility.

Preferred Skills: LEED AP BD+C required within 6 months of being hired, and to be maintained for duration of employment.
2 years of Energy modeling experience (eQuest or equivalent) is preferred, or a willingness to take additional on the job training and learn to be more proficient at eQuest Energy Modeling. Certified Energy Manager (CEM) Certified Passive House Designer (CPHD).


Salary:
Appointment Rate: $88,335 - $124,797 (Less than 2 years of active public service experience)
Incumbent Rate: $101,585 - $143,517 (2 years or more of active public service experience)
