Primary Functions and Accountabilities:

The Experienced Project Engineer will work with a team of engineers completing project management of the City’s traffic projects, public infrastructure projects, and assist in the implementation of the design and construction of private development projects.

Key responsibilities include:

• Responsible for coordinating the planning, design, and construction of the City’s public infrastructure projects including streets, bridges, storm sewer, signals, lighting, and parks. Responsibilities include administering the design scope, monitoring schedules and fees, creating and reviewing pay estimates, approving submittals, monitoring utility relocations, acquiring right-of-way and easements, assisting with engineering during construction, and coordinating close out.
• May collect, analyze and present traffic flow and control data, including signing, sight distance, and signal warrant studies. Ensures traffic data provided to and received from external agencies is in conformance with City Standards and good engineering practice.
• Responsible for coordinating the planning, design and construction of the City’s publicly owned facilities. Responsibilities include administering the design scope, monitoring schedules and fees, managing contracts with outside contractors, and working with the Community Development department to receive necessary required building permits.
• Coordinates consultant design projects for the accuracy of final plans and to ensure compliance with construction standards, city, federal, and state codes. Establishes and monitors the scope of work for each project, completes review of final plans and construction documents before seeking City Council or designated committee final approval. May coordinate in house design projects.
• Assists with private development projects as it relates to traffic, drainage, public infrastructure, City right-of-way, and easements. Responsibilities include working with Community Development Department, Planning Commission, developers, and owners, plan and submittal review and approval, construction oversite, and final approval of public infrastructure, grading, and stormwater quality devices.
• Works with Construction Inspectors and external contractors for the enforcement of the construction contract of public infrastructure projects. Responsibilities include providing engineering during construction, submittal reviews, getting required approval on legal documents associated with the project, regularly visits jobsites, and addresses problems in the field.

Minimum Education, Training and Certifications Requirements:

• Must have a minimum of a Bachelors’ degree in Civil Engineering from an accredited engineering school. Must have a minimum of four (4) years of experience in civil engineering design, construction, project management or equivalent experience. Experience in a municipality or public works is preferred.
• Working Knowledge of Uniform Traffic Control Devices and Traffic Impact Studies, and experience in Traffic engineering, preferred.
• Must hold and maintain a valid Certificate of Registration as Professional Engineer (PE) from the Kansas State Board of Technical Professions. If registered in another state, must obtain Kansas registration within one (1) year of hire.
• Must possess a valid driver’s license and acceptable driving record per the City’s drivers Use of Vehicles for City Business policy throughout employment with the City.
