As a member of the Recreation Program’s Operations Team, the Recreation Engineer works under the general guidance of the Recreation Operations Manager and in close collaboration with other members of the Division Planning and Design Team, Target Shooting Program Manager, Statewide Recreation Manager, and Region staff. They serve as a statewide engineering topic expert for the design, permitting, and construction of recreation projects. Their highest priority will be the development of designated target shooting sites, and they will also support other design and construction work, including remote trail bridges (pre-engineered), trailheads and parking lot improvements, and rustic campgrounds.

Additionally, the Recreation Engineer supports Region project managers throughout the design, permitting, and construction phases of recreation projects, including developing grading, drainage, and stormwater plans, as well as managing and reviewing third-party designs, engineering reports, and drawings. The engineer will utilize their experience in engineering and project management to provide consistent, safe, inclusive, sustainable, and environmentally responsible recreational opportunities while also supporting DNR’s mission to protect natural resources.

Skills

Required Qualifications:

--Bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering, Forest Engineering, or other applicable field AND 4 years of relevant experience.
OR An equivalent combination of education and/or experience.

--Professional Engineering (PE) license in Washington State
OR Meet eligibility criteria to sit for the Washington PE exam AND be willing to obtain a PE license as a condition of employment.

--Experience drafting/creating technical drawings, construction sets, and specifications.

--Experience managing multiple complex tasks, setting workload priorities, and completing tasks on time.

--Demonstrated commitment to fostering and supporting an environment that honors diversity, equity, inclusion, and environmental justice practices.

--Perform assigned duties in a manner consistent with applicable laws, regulations and public records retention.
Knowledge of:

-Theory, principles, practices, trends, problems, and interrelationship of structural, topographical, soils, groundwater, utility layout, grading/drainage, stormwater engineering, and social elements of design.
-Sketching, rendering, and drafting techniques and instruments.
-Drafting construction documentation sets.
-State and Federal regulations related to the duties. and requests are followed.

--Proficient in AutoCAD, Civil 3D, and Microsoft Office Suite, or similar software.

--Demonstrated ability to create, monitor, and work within project scope, budget, and schedule.

--Excellent verbal, written, and graphic communication skills as demonstrated by experience.
