Power System Protection Engineer (Early Career)

The Opportunity
We are seeking a motivated Power System Protection Engineer to join a growing Protection & Control team. This role is well suited for an early-career engineer looking to deepen their technical skills in protective relay settings, system modeling, and substation protection schemes while working alongside experienced engineers on real-world power system projects.
You’ll gain hands-on experience across transmission, distribution, and renewable systems in a collaborative, growth-focused environment.
What You’ll Do
Develop protective relay setpoints in accordance with industry standards, best practices, and client requirements
Perform relay settings calculations and create downloadable setting files using manufacturer platforms (SEL AcSELerator QuickSet, GE Enervista, etc.)
Support protection and control logic development for common substation schemes
Utilize power system modeling and analysis software (ASPEN, CAPE, CYME, ETAP, SKM)
Prepare engineering calculations, studies, and technical documentation
Assist with equipment selection and data collection for engineering deliverables
Coordinate with project teams and other engineering disciplines on assigned tasks
Support proposal and business development activities as needed
Continue developing technical knowledge and stay current with industry standards and technologies
Mentor interns and support entry-level engineers as skills progress
What We’re Looking For
1–4 years of experience in the transmission, distribution, or power industry
Foundational understanding of Protection & Control design (one-lines, three-lines, schematics, wiring diagrams)
Experience or exposure to protective relay settings development
Familiarity with system modeling tools (ASPEN, CAPE, CYME, ETAP, SKM)
Understanding of common protection schemes used in substations and renewable collector systems
Experience with Mathcad and Excel for relay calculations
Familiarity with communication protocols (DNP, SEL, MMS, Modbus)
Working knowledge of IEC 61850 (GOOSE, MMS, SV)
Awareness of NERC PRC standards and industry best practices
Strong written communication skills and ability to work in a team environment
Eagerness to learn, grow, and take on increasing responsibility
Minimum Qualifications
Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering (or related discipline) from an accredited program
Minimum of 1 year of relevant engineering experience
