Position Summary
The Software Engineer for Java Development contributes to the development of advanced nuclear simulation and engineering software. This role involves building high-performance, reliable applications used in regulated environments. This position collaborates with nuclear engineers, physicists, and software developers to deliver scalable solutions supporting nuclear reactor analysis and fuel cycle optimization.
This position can be remote, however day-to-day work collaboration advantages will be found if the employee is located in any of the following locations:
Idaho Falls, Idaho, USA
Wilmington, North Carolina, USA
Baltimore, Maryland, USA
Hamburg, Germany
Västeras, Sweden
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
The essential functions include, but are not limited to the following:
Design, develop, and maintain Java-based applications for nuclear simulation and analysis platforms.
Contribute to software used for reactor core modeling, fuel management, and safety analysis.
Collaborate with nuclear engineers and domain experts to translate complex physics models into software simulations.
Optimize performance for computationally intensive applications and large-scale simulations.
Develop and maintain APIs, backend services, and data processing pipelines.
Participate in code reviews, testing, and validation processes aligned with quality standards (e.g., NQA-1).
Troubleshoot and resolve software defects in mission-critical systems.
Support integration of simulation tools with other engineering platforms and workflows.
Travel: Travel expectations are flexible, but would likely be 20% or less and include international travel locations.
Minimum Qualifications (Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities)
Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, or related field.
5+ years experience in Java development.
Strong understanding of object-oriented programming and software design patterns.
Strong understanding of Java Swing and rich client application development (e.g., Apache NetBeans Platform).
Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
Experience with multithreading, concurrency, and performance optimization.
Experience with Git version control systems and Continuous Integration/Continuous Development systems (e.g., GitLab, GitHub).
Experience working with HDF5 and databases, including designing and maintaining schemas; reading/writing scientific datasets; and integrating persistent storage into applications.
Experience in scientific computing, simulation software, or engineering applications.
Familiarity with numerical methods, physics-based modeling, or high-performance computing (HPC).
Experience working in regulated environments (e.g., nuclear, aerospace, defense) preferred.
Understanding of nuclear engineering concepts is preferred.
Microsoft Office Suite experience required.
Must have advanced proficiency in English, including the ability to write detailed reports and conduct client presentations.
Pay:
$110,000.00 - $130,000.00 per year
