Transmission Planning Engineer

Work Setting: Hybrid – San Jose, California
A leading energy and utilities organisation is seeking a Transmission Planning Engineer to support transmission system reliability, generation interconnection studies, and long-term grid expansion planning.
This role focuses on developing transmission solutions that support renewable energy integration, grid reliability, and regulatory compliance across large-scale power systems.
Key Responsibilities
Perform transmission planning and reliability studies for electric power systems
Conduct power flow and transient stability simulations using industry-standard tools
Support generation interconnection and deliverability studies
Develop transmission expansion plans to support renewable energy and grid growth
Coordinate with regulatory bodies, grid operators, and external stakeholders
Analyse transmission system performance and recommend mitigation solutions
Develop and maintain system models, simulations, and engineering studies
Create automation tools and scripts using Python, Matlab, VBA, or similar technologies
Review transmission line and substation models and electrical diagrams
Support compliance with NERC, WECC, CAISO, and FERC standards
Mentor junior engineers and contribute to technical planning initiatives
Requirements
Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering or related technical field
3+ years of experience in electrical engineering, transmission planning, or power systems operations
Experience with transmission planning studies and power system analysis
Knowledge of power flow simulation tools such as PSLF or similar software
Familiarity with NERC and WECC reliability standards
Programming experience with Python, Matlab, VBA, or EPCL preferred
Strong analytical and problem-solving skills
Ability to collaborate across technical and regulatory teams
Preferred Qualifications
Experience with renewable energy integration and generation interconnection studies
EIT or PE certification preferred
Master’s degree in Electrical Engineering is a plus
Experience working with utilities, grid operators, or large-scale energy infrastructure projects
