Summary

The Senior Hardware Test Engineer is a high-impact individual contributor responsible for hands-on test development, hardware characterization, bench evaluation, fixture development, data analysis, and failure investigation for complex electro-mechanical medical devices. This role is ideal for an engineer who enjoys working close to the hardware, solving difficult technical problems in the lab, and generating the data needed to drive critical design decisions. Working across technologies that may include robotics, motion control, digital imaging, optics, and associated electronics, this engineer partners closely with electrical, mechanical, firmware, software, quality, manufacturing, and systems teams to improve design robustness and ensure hardware performance is well understood throughout development. This role offers the opportunity to become a go-to lab expert, lead challenging debug efforts, refine test methods and automation, and mentor others through strong technical execution rather than people management.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following: (Other duties may be assigned.)

Lead hands-on hardware test plans, bench experiments, and characterization studies for complex electro-mechanical subsystems, assemblies, and prototypes.
Serve as a senior lab-based technical expert for difficult hardware bring-up, debug, and troubleshooting across electrical, mechanical, optical, and electro-mechanical domains.
Design and maintain test fixtures, harnesses, and lab setups that enable efficient, repeatable evaluation of hardware performance, reliability, and robustness.
Develop and refine test methods for hardware verification and characterization, including instrumentation selection, data collection, and repeatable lab procedures.
Build and improve automated test scripts, data analysis workflows, and lab best practices using tools such as Python, MATLAB, or LabVIEW.
Characterize subsystem performance across electrical, mechanical, optical, thermal, and timing behaviors, and translate results into clear technical recommendations.
Investigate complex hardware failures, perform root cause analysis, reproduce issues in the lab, and partner with design teams to validate corrective actions.
Contribute to requirements review, verification planning, and traceability with a strong focus on clarity, testability, and objective evidence.
Support formal verification and design verification activities through protocol development, test execution, data review, and technical reporting.
Provide practical hardware-focused input in cross-functional design reviews with emphasis on testability, reliability, manufacturability, and serviceability.
Mentor less experienced engineers and technicians in test methods, debug practices, instrumentation use, data interpretation, and documentation quality.
Support production transfer and sustaining engineering through advanced test method development, failure reproduction, and technically complex issue resolution.

COMPETENCIES

To perform the job successfully, an individual should demonstrate the following competencies:

Complexity – Works on complex issues where analysis of situations or data requires an in-depth evaluation of variable factors. Exercises judgment in selecting methods, techniques, and acceptance criteria for obtaining results. Consults with key resources outside own area of expertise.

Knowledge – Having wide-ranging experience, uses techinical knowledge and company resources to resolve complex issues in creative and effective ways.

Teamwork - Balances team and individual responsibilities; Exhibits objectivity and openness to others’ views; Gives and welcomes feedback; Contributes to building a positive team spirit; Able to build morale and group commitments to goals and objectives; Supports everyone’s efforts to succeed; Recognizes accomplishments of other team members.

Independence - Acts independently to research and develope methods and procedures on new or special testing. Generally receives little instruction on day-to-day work, and participates in scoping and defining new assignments.
