Job Description

JOB INFORMATION

Senior Electrical Engineer positions supervise and coordinate in the work of subordinates engaged in the design, review, and construction of proposed building and right-of-way electrical facility projects to ensure compliance with local, state, and national electrical ordinances, codes, and regulations; electrical asset management; research and determine the acceptability of new materials and methods of construction; attend meetings and make presentations; prepare information bulletins; develop and write applicable codes; prepare reports and correspondence; and perform other duties as assigned.

Senior Electrical Engineer positions in the Public Utilities Department provide detailed electrical engineering design review for the department’s Capital Improvement Program; review electrical engineering design plans and specifications and complete technical studies for water and wastewater facility projects and systems; coordinate the department’s renewable energy portfolio including identification of new projects and expansion of renewables; provide technical assistance; monitor and track energy usage data to identify trends and ways to reduce energy usage and cost; andprepare and monitor budget for section and/or electrical projects.

Eligible benefitted employees originally hired on or after July 10, 2021, will be automatically enrolled in the San Diego City Employees Retirement System (SDCERS).
Senior Electrical Engineer employees with valid State of California registration as a Professional Electrical Engineer are eligible for 31% additional pay.

Minimum Requirements

You must meet the following requirements on the date you apply, unless otherwise indicated.

EXPERIENCE: Four years of full-time professional electrical engineering experience.

Note

City of San Diego employees using Out-of-Class Assignment (OCA) experience to qualify must submit written documentation signed by their appointing authority or payroll specialist, detailing the work performed, dates, and total number of qualifying OCA hours. OCA experience without the required documentation will NOT be considered.

REGISTRATION:Registration as a Professional Electrical Engineer with the State of California.

LICENSE:A valid California Class C Driver License is required at the time of hire.

HIGHLY DESIRABLE:

Possession of a valid LEED (Leadership in Energy & Environmental Design) Certification/Accreditation or equivalent.
Electrical engineering experience working with a large water or wastewater utility.
Experience in the development of master plans, electrical designs, and plan sets to support the deployment of clean energy technologies including electric vehicle charging equipment, solar photovoltaics, battery energy storage systems, microgrids, advanced lighting controls, and building automation systems.
Possession of a valid certification as a Plan Examiner from International Code Council.
