Process Engineer - Generation, Renewables, & Gas
SCS, Technical Shared Services, Environmental Solutions - Process Engineering & Chemistry
WORK LOCATION
This position will be located in Birmingham, AL
This position requires travel (up to 50%), including air travel. Valid U.S driver's license required.
This position will require a mix of both field and office work.
Some relocation assistance is available if the selected candidate currently resides outside the Birmingham area.
Position Summary
The Environmental Solutions department within Southern Company's Technical Shared Services is currently seeking candidates for the position of Process Engineer. This position supports Southern Company Generation electric power plants and Southern Company Gas facilities across the United States. Specific project support within these plants and facilities includes water treatment, wastewater treatment, air emissions control, battery energy storage systems (BESS), liquefied natural gas (LNG) projects, and other chemical processes.
This role will include aspects of process engineering and process safety. The successful candidate will have the flexibility to expand as the needs of the organization and the engineer's career evolve.
Major Job Responsibilities
Provide process engineering support for projects across the Southern Company fleet
Develop and review design basis documentation, technical specifications, and recommendations
Review engineering drawings and packages to ensure compliance with company specifications & guidelines as well as pertinent codes & regulations
Support the design and execution of pilot programs and/or testing to demonstrate process performance and environmental compliance
Participate in design and process safety reviews of existing and planned facilities
Participate in and facilitate Process Hazard Analyses (PHA, HAZID, HAZOP, etc.), Hazard Mitigation Analyses (HMA), Design Hazard Reviews, and Pre-Startup Safety Reviews (PSSR)
Administer the Management of Change (MOC) process
Review and validate process equipment design specifications, safeguard specifications, commissioning and test data in support of PSSR process
Perform PSM/RMP audits and reviews
Effectively communicate complex topics to various working groups both internal and external to Southern Company
Effectively work with various stakeholders across Southern Company
Education
POSITION QUALIFICATIONS
Bachelor's degree in chemical engineering is preferred.
Other degrees may be considered with significant relevant experience.
Experience
At least 2 years working in power generation, paper mill, petrochemical, refinery, gas operations, pipeline or other heavy industrial processes
Exposure to plant environments
Specification, commissioning, and troubleshooting of mechanical and chemical processes preferred
Water treatment experience preferred
Project and/or team leadership experience desired
Designing hazardous substance processes, especially LNG, gas storage, anhydrous ammonia, chlorine, or other PSM / RMP covered systems preferred
Facilitating HAZOPs, PSSRs, and MOC processes strongly preferred
Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities
Familiarity with process safety and inherently safe design principles
Familiarity with processes and operation of power plants, chemical plants, LNG plants, and natural gas processing plants
Knowledge of fossil-fueled combustion systems, gas/liquid contacting systems, and emission control systems is desired
Strong analytical ability to grasp advanced technical concepts for use in problem solving and troubleshooting
Familiarity with codes and standards applying to LNG and natural gas engineering, plant construction, and operation
Ability to successfully manage multiple projects with varying deadlines and priorities
Strong communication & presentation skills
Proficiency in Microsoft Office, SharePoint, Power Automate, and PowerApps a plus
