With a comprehensive portfolio and deep technical expertise, we help customers meet the demands of the global market. Join us and help shape the future of aerospace and defense.
Are you fascinated by the engineering precision that enables aircraft to safely land on aircraft carriers? At Collins Aerospace, you can play a pivotal role in shaping the next generation of mission-critical navigation systems. We are looking for a Principal Systems Engineer Requirements Lead to provide technical leadership within the systems engineering team and drive the development of requirements for the Joint Precision Approach and Landing System (JPALS) and related programs. This role is ideal for an experienced systems engineer who excels at solving complex problems, communicating clearly, and guiding cross-functional teams toward well-structured, high-quality system solutions.
As the Systems Engineering Requirements Lead, you will take ownership of defining, managing, and evolving the system requirements for a fielded GPS-based precision approach and landing system operating in some of the most demanding operational environments. You will lead the requirements process across the entire system lifecycle—ensuring clarity, traceability, and alignment with program needs—while collaborating with engineering, program management, test, and customer stakeholders.
What You Will Do

Own the system requirements lifecycle through system-level and subsystem-level requirements development based on customer specifications and operational concepts, requirements decomposition, allocation, and traceability
Analyze stakeholder needs and translate them into technical, testable, and feasible requirements
Apply systems thinking to ensure requirements completeness, consistency, and proper allocation across hardware, software, and interfaces
Lead system requirements engineering team and provide guidance through key systems engineering milestones, such as SRR, PDR, CDR, and other major reviews
Develop and maintain requirements in IBM Rational DOORS, including traceability and change impact assessment
Create and use scripts to automate documentation import/export to/from DOORS across multiple formats
Define and document system and subsystem interfaces, contributing to ICDs and architecture artifacts
Lead technical discussions, design reviews, and requirement change assessments
Support verification planning by defining verification methods and collaborating with test teams
Qualifications You Must Have
Extensive experience in systems engineering for complex, multi-disciplinary systems (hardware, software, avionics, mission systems, etc.)
Strong proficiency with requirements development, decomposition, allocation, and traceability across the system lifecycle
Demonstrated ability to lead cross-functional engineering teams in defining, reviewing, and managing requirements
Experience guiding teams through major reviews
Ability to mentor junior engineers and establish best practices for requirements management
Familiarity with generating and maintaining technical documentation such as specifications, ICDs, Test Requirements Documents (TRDs), and Verification Cross-Reference Matrices
Proficiency with IBM Rational DOORS and requirements management best practices
Proficient with Digital Engineering tools (DOORS, Cameo, Microsoft Office Suite, Jira, Confluence)
Experience with risk management, trade studies, and decision analysis
Typically requires a degree in Science, Technology, Engineering or Mathematics (STEM) and minimum 8 years prior relevant experience or an Advanced Degree in a related field and minimum 5 years of experience
Qualifications We Prefer
Strong understanding of systems engineering principles and lifecycle (concept ? design ? integration ? verification ? validation)
Systems thinking & approach. Ability to understand how system components interact
Familiarity with Engineering Lifecycle Optimization (ELO) – Publishing
Prior work on GPS/PNT, avionics, or control systems
Experience with Model-Based System Engineering (MBSE) practices and tools and methodologies (e.g., Cameo/MagicDraw, Rhapsody, SysML)
