POSITION OVERVIEW

We are seeking an experienced **Controls Project Engineer (CPE)** to join a growing team specializing in material handling, automation, and sortation systems across distribution and parcel-sortation environments.

The CPE serves as a **senior technical lead** on automation controls projects, overseeing engineering execution from initial design through final commissioning and client acceptance. Candidates in this role may lead projects independently, including multi-site or cross-regional assignments, and are expected to bring both deep technical knowledge and strong field leadership capabilities to every engagement.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

? Lead controls engineering activities across the full project lifecycle --- including design, development, testing, commissioning, and startup

? Serve as the primary technical lead on automation controls projects within material handling and sortation environments

? Develop, review, and modify PLC programs, including working knowledge of **User Defined Types (UDTs)** and **Add-On Instructions (AOIs)**

? Oversee and direct the work of Controls Engineers on project teams, ensuring technical accuracy and schedule adherence

? Coordinate effectively with project managers, mechanical teams, electrical teams, and client stakeholders throughout project execution

? Ensure controls design aligns with defined project scope, schedule, and quality standards

? Lead on-site commissioning activities, including system startup, debugging, and client acceptance testing

? Manage Canadian or multi-regional project assignments as required by project demands

? Provide technical guidance, mentorship, and professional development support to junior engineers on the team

REQUIRED SKILLS \& QUALIFICATIONS

? Demonstrated experience in controls engineering within **material handling, automation, conveyor, sortation, or distribution** environments

? Proficiency in PLC programming --- **Allen-Bradley / Rockwell Studio 5000** strongly preferred

? Working knowledge of **UDTs and AOIs** within PLC programming environments

? Hands-on experience with **HMI and SCADA** platforms

? Strong project leadership skills with the ability to drive technical decisions independently in the field

? Excellent communication and coordination skills across cross-functional teams and client stakeholders

? Bachelor's degree in **Electrical Engineering, Controls Engineering, Computer Engineering**, or a related field preferred; equivalent professional experience will be considered

PREFERRED BACKGROUND

? Prior experience in a **Lead Controls Engineer or Controls Project Engineer** role on large-scale automation or material handling projects

? Background in **distribution center (DC), parcel sortation, fulfillment, or intralogistics automation** environments

? Proven experience leading project teams through field commissioning activities

? Familiarity with **cross-regional or multi-site project execution**, including international assignments
