Renewable Engineering Engineer

Position Purpose

Madison Gas and Electric Company (MGE) is seeking an experienced engineer to join our Energy Production department. The Engineer Renewable Engineering will develop, manage, and maintain our fleet of utility-scale renewable generation sites. Through a variety of responsibilities, this position will play a key role in achieving the Company's goal of net-zero carbon electricity by 2050.

Duties and Responsibilities

* Manage contractors through the design, engineering, and construction phases of projects. Projects include but are not limited to solar, wind, battery energy storage, and microgrid systems.
* Develops work breakdown structures for integrating MGE tasks into contractor schedules.
* Coordinates internal MGE resources with the project contractor and their subcontractors.
* Coordinates with internal MGE groups to design and construct renewable generation interconnection facilities.
* Coordinates with renewable project developers, energy supply engineering, and substation engineering to design and construct SCADA and communication systems for renewable generation projects.
* Evaluate future projects.
* Assists in performing feasibility reviews of proposed renewable and energy storage projects.
* Assists in negotiating construction-related contracts for future renewable generation projects.
* Provides technical support and prepares submittals for regulatory and governmental review processes necessary to obtain permits and approvals for renewable generation and energy storage projects.
* Maintains existing projects.
* Manages predictive and preventative maintenance programs for existing renewable generation sites.
* Manages O\&M contracts.
* Coordinates and manages projects to repair, replace, and/or upgrade existing systems and subsystems.
* Coordinates and communicates with MGE legal and risk management to manage warranties and event-driven equipment failures.
* Provides technical communications and SCADA expertise.
* Assesses and recommends SCADA and communication equipment replacements and upgrades to maintain reliable communication and control of existing renewable generation sites.
* Develop SCADA and EMS standards for renewable generation projects.
* Troubleshoots SCADA and communication problems at renewable generation sites.
* Research and evaluates new and emerging methods and technologies for communications and controls.

Qualifications

Education and Experience
- -----------------------

* Bachelor of Science degree in electrical engineering or a similar field.
* At least three years of electrical power systems engineering experience desired. This position may be filled at a higher level based on qualifications.
* Project management experience and demonstrated ability coordinating the efforts of multidiscipline, multiagency project teams to complete work.
* Registration as a Professional Engineer in the state of Wisconsin preferred but not required.

Knowledge and Skills
- -------------------

* Knowledge of and strong interest in modern communication systems (e.g., Internet control protocols, utility SCADA protocols, Spread Spectrum Radio, cellular technology, optical fiber, etc.).
* Knowledge of and strong interest in emerging electric utility technologies (e.g., renewable energy sources, energy storage, customer energy management, smart grid, and grid optimization).
* Exceptional customer service and communication skills with the ability to translate complex information for non-technical audiences.
* Strong interpersonal skills with experience leading teams consisting of members not under their direct supervision.

Work Location

* This hybrid role is based at our Madison, WI headquarters. While three days onsite is the minimum, team collaboration and business needs may require additional in-office presence.
