Job Description

OMNI is honored to partner with American Rail Engineers Corporation (ARE) in the search for a highly skilled Engineer V to join the Engineering Services team. ARE is a leading engineering and environmental services firm that specializes in providing innovative engineering solutions for North American freight railways that prioritize safety, regulatory compliance and long-term performance.

As an Engineer V, you will lead multidisciplinary design teams, develop practical and innovative engineering solutions, and support projects from planning and design through construction. You will serve as a trusted technical resource on challenging structural engineering issues, contribute to client relationships, and mentor less experienced engineers while helping ensure projects are delivered safely, efficiently, and to the highest standards of quality.

This is an excellent opportunity for a licensed railroad bridge engineer who enjoys solving complex technical challenges while remaining actively involved in project delivery and client engagement. The ideal candidate brings extensive railroad bridge design experience, strong project management capabilities, and a commitment to technical excellence and collaboration.

Responsibilities:
Reporting to the Director of Engineering Services, the Engineer V serves as a hands-on technical leader and lead engineer on railroad bridge projects, including bridge rehabilitation, bridge replacement, culvert, and emergency repair assignments for railroad clients across North America.
•   Serve as lead engineer on complex projects, including steel structures, major replacements, and emergency repairs.
•   Lead multidisciplinary design teams through alternatives analysis, design, and construction support.
•   Establish design criteria and technical approaches for assigned projects.
•   Respond to emergency events (e.g., floods, strikes, derailments) with rapid assessment and repair recommendations.
•   Prepare proposals, scopes, and fee estimates, and build client relationships.
•   Mentor engineers and support the development of ARE standards and tools.
•   Support ARE’s Environmental Projects team with engineering support necessary to obtain permits and environmental compliance.
•   When participating in inspection assignments, time is billed as the Inspector V-VI level, based on the individual’s inspection experience and role on the team.
•   Prepare and review engineering calculations, drawings, technical reports, proposals, scopes of work, and fee estimates; support project delivery through plan review, project tracking, client communications, and maintenance of project documentation and records.
•   Maintain required railroad safety qualifications and comply with ARE and client safety rules, including On-Track Safety requirements.
•   Travel up to 15% nationwide to bridge sites, client offices, and construction projects for field investigations, inspections, and construction support activities, including work in remote locations and varying outdoor conditions.

What Success Looks Like:
The Engineer V carries a target utilization rate of 75% on projects and is expected to:
•   Ensure projects are delivered on schedule and within budget with high client satisfaction.
•   Contribute to business development and building strong client relationships.
•   Provide consistent and proactive communication.

Qualifications:
•   Bachelor's degree in Civil Engineering, Structural Engineering, or a related field from an ABET-accredited program.
•   8-10 years of relevant engineering experience, including significant experience with bridge design and rehabilitation, preferably specific to railroad bridges.
•   Active Professional Engineer (PE) license in at least one state, with the ability and willingness to obtain additional licensure as needed; multi-state licensure preferred.
•   Extensive knowledge of the AREMA Manual for Railway Engineering and railroad bridge design, load rating, and rehabilitation practices.
•   Experience working with Class I railroad design standards and approval processes is preferred.
•   Proficiency with design software such as MicroStation or AutoCAD.
•   Demonstrated experience serving as Engineer of Record on complex bridge projects.
•   Experience leading engineering and design efforts on complex infrastructure projects.
•   Strong analytical, problem-solving, and technical design capabilities.
•   Experience preparing and reviewing engineering calculations, plans, specifications, and technical reports.
•   Strong written and verbal communication skills.
•   Proficiency with the Microsoft Office Suite.
•   Ability to obtain and maintain railroad safety qualifications and client-specific certifications.
•   Willingness and ability to travel nationwide, including remote project sites and varying field conditions.
•   Valid driver's license and ability to travel by vehicle and air as required.
•   Ability to pass pre-employment and ongoing drug and alcohol testing in accordance with ARE policies and applicable FRA requirements.

Why Join ARE?
At ARE, you’ll do more than design infrastructure. You’ll help strengthen the transportation networks that keep communities and industries connected. As part of a growing and forward-thinking engineering firm, you’ll take on complex railroad bridge projects that leave a lasting impact while collaborating with respected industry experts who are passionate about innovation, technical excellence, and professional development.
Additional benefits include:
•   Competitive salary package commensurate with experience.
•   Work on impactful infrastructure projects that promote sustainability.
•   Opportunities for professional growth and development; industry conference attendance.
•   Community involvement and volunteering opportunities.
•   Medical, dental, vision, 401(k) with match, short-term and long-term disability and life insurance.
