Assistant Specialist – Nuclear Engineering – UC Berkeley

The van Bibber laboratory within the Nuclear Engineering Department at the University of California Berkeley, is seeking a full-time Assistant Specialist for development of novel microwave cavities for a microwave cavity dark matter axion search.

Appointment length:
This is a full time, six-month position with the possibility of renewal. Anticipated start date: September 1, 2017

The candidate will support R&D, fabrication and deployment of specialized microwave cavities used in the HAYSTAC experiment (Haloscope At Yale Sensitive To Axion CDM), for which UC Berkeley has prime responsibility. The cavities utilized in this experiment have a combination of unusual and demanding requirements, specific to this dark matter experiment, and which will become increasingly sophisticated going forward. The candidate will perform machine shop work to build parts, assemble and integrate full microwave cavities and resonators. This person will also do basic engineering and exercise judgment in selecting design options, with relatively minimal supervision. The candidate will also perform microwave cavity simulations on a high performance computer, and assist with characterization of prototype and final-article cavities using a bead perturbation setup for field mapping.

Basic Qualifications (at the time of application):
A Bachelor's degree or equivalent degree in physics, engineering or related field.

Additional Qualifications (by start date):
Experience with microwave test equipment for cavity characterization is important, as is experience with microwave simulations codes. The successful candidate should be a qualified and experienced machinist with demonstrated mechanical skills.

Preferred Qualifications:
Ability to conduct independent research
Demonstrated writing and communication skills
Ability to approach research challenges in a methodical and thorough fashion

Salary will be commensurate with qualifications and experience and based on UC Berkeley salary scales.
