The Senior Chemical Engineer is responsible for processes and systems within Western Forge as well as providing support across the Tool Group. Success in this position requires a data driven, self-starting, organized and detail-oriented personality as well as the ability to pursue tasks independently of managerial oversight. Primary responsibilities include leadership of continuous improvement projects, supporting daily production needs, and implementation of quality initiatives. The position will work closely with production to ensure desired metal finishing outcomes, assist the Lab Technician in operation of the Chemical Analysis Lab and will have direct involvement in the process and related troubleshooting required to ensure quality requirements and efficiencies are met.



The following includes a list of primary responsibilities. Other duties may be assigned by the supervisor or manager to meet various business demands.


  • Be knowledgeable of the manufacturing equipment, its principle of operation, purpose, and its interaction with the product.  Support and assist the current manufacturing processes.
    • Coordinating internal and external resources as needed for project support
    • Design and fabrication of tooling
    • Sourcing and procurement of equipment 
  • Lead and support continuous improvement and quality improvement projects. 
  • Project management, including, but not limited to: coordinating internal and external resources, development and adherence to timelines, project reporting
  • Design, fabrication, sourcing and procurement of tooling, equipment, PLC controls, etc. as necessary
  • Internal and external corrective actions 
  • Demonstrated background in Lean Manufacturing (Must) and Six Sigma analytical methodologies (Preferred)
    • Strong problem analysis/solving skills as well as verbal and written communication skills is highly desired
    • Establish equipment capacity model and perform standard time analysis on cells
    • Review and design layout of equipments, materials, and workspace according to in-house requirements to optimize production’s efficiency and effectiveness
    • Review production schedules, engineering specifications, work instructions, control plans and related information to improve manufacturing methods, procedures, and activities
    • Study operations sequence, human work factors, material flow, project information and related information to reduce waste
    • Study productivity, to compare daily actual vs. standard output, identify processes bottleneck and recommend methods for productivity’s improvement

  • Lead and assist with new product introduction and product scale up
    • Provide process and manufacturing perspective during product development process
    • Lead scale up from lab scale to low volume production and ramp to high volume manufacturing
    • Coordinate with R&D, marketing, quality and production throughout the development process.

  • Support preventative and unscheduled maintenance program
    • Ensure work is performed in a timely fashion
    • Assist with troubleshooting and root cause analysis
    • Ensure procedures are followed
    • Coordinate with internal and external resources

 

Additional Responsibilities may include but are not limited to the following below.

  • Provide technical assistance and support to our customers on an as needed basis.  May include travel to customer sites, teleconferences, etc.
  • Maintain product and production processes, specifications, drawings, etc.
  • Utilize change control process
  • Update drawings and specifications in SolidWorks or other appropriate software
  • Production floor plan and material flow drawings
  • Coordinate with Quality to ensure proper maintenance of work instructions, FMEAs, control plans and other documentation as required.
  • ISO Compliance
  • Ensure that ISO documentation (procedures, work instructions, etc.) are up to date for all engineering and maintenance systems

WORKING KNOWLEDGE

  • Thorough understanding of metal finishing industry and processes as related to rack and barrel Nickel Finish Electro-Plating, Black Oxide and E-Coat.
  • Working knowledge of quality systems, quality control, process control and statistical analysis.
  • Experience with non-destructive testing utilizing XRF technology, Corrosion testing procedures, equipment and ASME B107.x specifications, Titration, PH, Atomic Absorption
  • Exposure to metal working and finishing equipment and processes, grinding and vibratory metal finishing technologies. Waster water processing and sampling.

 

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE

  • B.S. in Engineering field required (Chemical/Industrial Engineering preferred)
  • 7 to 10 years of relevant industry experience
  • Processes for this position are chemical in nature.  Chemistry or chemical engineering background is strongly desirable.

 

LANGUAGE SKILLS

  • Ability to read, write, and interpret work process procedures, customer reports, and general business correspondence
  • Effective project management skills
  • Bilingual (English/Mandarin) is desirable, but not required.

 

MATHEMATICAL SKILLS

  • Ability to apply mathematical concepts such as statistics, fundamentals of plane and solid geometry, trigonometry, fractions, percentages, ratios, and proportions to practical situations as well as application to processes and designs
  • Solid understanding of statistics and application to manufacturing processes including statistical process control (SPC), design of experiments (DOE), statistical hypothesis testing.

 

PROBLEM-SOLVING ABILITY

  • Ability to identify and define problem, apply root-cause analysis techniques, and execute a resolution plan
  • Follow through the entire problem-solving process by reporting and documenting the outcome.

 

MANUFACTURING TOOLS

  • Knowledge and capable of applying and customizing Lean Manufacturing, 5S, and Six Sigma to unique manufacturing processes
  • Solid understanding of statistics and application to manufacturing processes
  • Understanding of PLC and process control principles
  • Knowledgeable of basic drafting principles
  • Knowledgeable of basic manufacturing support systems and processes (Kan Ban, maintenance, CAD, change control, ISO, etc.)
  • Fluent in AutoCAD and MS Office suite
  • Familiarity with MS Access or SQL databases
