Job Description

EngineeringU is a 12-month rotational Accelerated Development Program that offers select recent graduates to jumpstart their career by completing a structured curriculum and the opportunity to learn/work alongside John Crane tenured engineers. They have the opportunity to gain hands-on experience and post-program career placement in critical roles across John Crane. Placement is based on aptitude, preferences and company needs.

  • Onboarding - Interactive workshop based training on the following subjects:
    • Mechanical Wet Seal basics, seal elements, assembly, heat generation, cooling flowrate, materials, seal selection, troubleshooting, etc.
    • Mechanical Dry Gas Seal basics, selection, calculations, design, manufacturing, assembly, repair, testing, etc.
    • Seal Support Systems, Heat Exchangers, Cyclone Separators, Filtration, Valves, etc.
    • Couplings and Bearings
    • Rotary Equipment Basics – Pumps, Mixers, Compressors, Turbines, etc.
    • Project Management
    • Presentation Skills
    • Some training and seminars take place in various locations across the country
  • Rotations - On the job training in the following areas:
    • Wet Seal Design & Application Engineering
    • Dry Gas Seal Design & Application Engineering
    • R&D / Laboratory
    • Manufacturing
    • Field and Customer Reliability Engineering (Various US locations)
  • Capstone Project – Long term development project which requires skills in creativity, project management, design, FEA, prototyping, testing, and final presentation in order to solve a real world problem for the business.
  • Engineering software programs – Solid Edge (CAD), TeamCenter (Drawing Database), FEA, Engineering WebCalcs.
  • Post-Program Placement – Assistance with placement in a critical engineering role at John Crane after successfully completing the EngineeringU program.
  • The EngineeringU program will challenge and develop areas such as creativity, communication, planning, organization, teamwork, leadership, adaptability, integrity, customer focus/service orientation and analysis/problem solving.
  • Additional duties and responsibilities will vary upon business needs.
Position Requirements
  • Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering (or equivalent degree) or letter from registrar confirming graduation date by May/June 2019
  • GPA of 2.8 or higher
  • Previous engineering experience (internship, co-op, undergraduate research, etc) strongly preferred
  • Must be able to work independently or in coordination with an engineer in development of designs or adaptations requiring mechanical engineering skills. This encompasses the ability to use and interpret data from engineering programs.
  • Must have good problem solving skills, which would include the ability to gather, correlate and present statistical data for review and use by an engineer or other parties toward the completion of an assigned project.
  • Experience in design, drafting and related technical assignments is a plus.
Physical/Mental Requirements
  • Must be able to sit for extend periods of time; a minimum of 2 hours.
  • Must be able to maneuver to all areas of the office, shop, warehouse, or manufacturing plant
  • Must be able to lift and carry up to 30 pounds.
  • Must be able to bend, reach, kneel, twist, and grip items while working at assigned desk area.
  • Must have the manual dexterity and coordination to operate office equipment.
  • Must be able to simultaneously manage several objectives, changing priorities and reassign priorities to complete assignments.
  • Must be able to read, write, speak and understand English.
  • Must be able to respond to visual and aural cues.
EHS Requirements
  • Complete all work in a safe manner and follow all safety requirements consistent with supporting the Company’s goals.
  • Lifting guidelines in accordance with the Manual Lifting Guidelines noted in the Safety Handbook.
  • Follow all environmental requirements consistent with supporting the company’s environmental performance goals.
  • Complete, and actively participate in all other EHS training requirements
Work Environment

Work environment is typically considered within a Smiths location during normal or extended business hours to include offices, manufacturing plants and repair facilities. Work environment may also include customer sites including oil well sites, and meeting venues.

The noise level in the work environment is usually loud and approved PPE is required when on the factory floor
