Position Summary:

Interface with all Bendix CVS suppliers, customers, and plants in the following areas: failure analysis of non-metallics with root/cause identification, quality performance and expectations, manufacturability reviews of new products manufactured with non-metallic materials, interpretation of requirements per engineering drawings and specifications, corrective action feedback.

Essential Functions:

  • Material identification and verification of non-metallics, organic coatings and synthetic polymers.
  • Perform failure analysis of coatings, mechanical and electronic assemblies that are manufactured from non-metallics.
  • Prepare material and process specifications.
  • Evaluate materials by non-destructive, destructive, and mechanical property testing.
  • Monitor materials research and propose new materials/processes for business use to improve product performance and or meet regulatory changes.
  • Lead efforts to conform to IATF 16949 requirements and industry standards (ASTM, SAE, etc.).
  • Provide supplier and manufacturing plant support.
  • Investigate, evaluate, and report returned product from customers.

Required Experience

Experience:

  • Materials engineer, or polymer engineer versed in the automotive components field.
  • Excellent technical/analytical skills to perform metallography, failure analyses and maintain lab instrumentation.
  • Knowledgeable in polymer selection, evaluation and analysis. Experience with corrosion resistant coatings, iron and aluminum castings fields a positive.
  • Experience with optical and scanning electron microscopes, infrared spectroscopy, and thermogravimetric analysis desired.
  • Strong customer and supplier interface experience.
  • Automotive/truck industry experience a plus.

Knowledge: 

  • Excellent knowledge of polymer/materials engineering preferably versed in automotive components field.
  • Knowledge in polymer selection, evaluation and analysis.
  • Excellent technical/analytical skills to perform metallography, failure analyses and maintain lab instrumentation.
  • Knowledge of OSHA machine guarding and general safety regulations, as well as, Quality Standards such as IATF 16949 standards.
  • Good understanding of business principles and practices that assist in delivering favorable bottom line result.

Education:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Polymer or Materials Engineering required. Master’s degree preferred.
  • Six Sigma certification Green or Black Belt preferred.
