Job Description

The City of Olathe Public Works Department is seeking a Civil Engineer III to make a difference in one of the fastest growing communities in the nation.  As a member of our Transportation team you will develop and implement traffic flow improvements, collaborate and partner with multiple municipal partners and citizens, and utilize cutting edge technology through our relationships with automotive manufacturers, such as Audi of America.  The goal of our Public Works Department is to provide and maintain safe streets, sidewalks, trails, great-tasting water, and excellent public services.  Join us to help "Set the Standard for Excellence".

This Civil Engineer position will manage and exercise professional judgment in the areas of transportation planning, traffic engineering and asset management in the areas of traffic signals, streetlights,  pavement markings and signs.

  • Manage the design of public improvement projects; provide guidance to assigned staff; ensure compliance with Federal, State and City codes and regulations.
  • Review new development and public improvement construction plans.
  • Ensure compliance with the Access Management Plan to improve or sustain traffic flow at appropriate levels of service.
  • Exercise professional judgment in accordance with currently accepted practices of civil engineering, and appropriate laws and codes.
  • Perform various traffic engineering field reviews.  Utilize data for evaluating and improving traffic flow.
  • Assist construction inspectors in the interpretation of plans, recommend alternative solutions and approve changes orders.
  • Participate in consultants for design various city projects; review and manage consultant studies, designs, plans, specifications and related items.
  • Assist in the preparation and supervision of consultant and contractor services contracts.
  • Participate in a variety of special engineering studies to determine impact of various projects, provide recommendations and prepare technical reports.
  • Respond to questions and concerns of staff, other departments, consultants and the public.
  • Perform related duties and responsibilities as required.


EXPERIENCE AND EDUCATION GUIDELINES Any combination of experience and education that would likely provide the required knowledge, skills and abilities is acceptable. A typical way to obtain the knowledge, skills and abilities would be:
Experience: Five to eight years in civil engineering, with and emphasis in transportation engineering, preferably with experience in a municipality or Public Works department.
Knowledge of:
  • Transportation Planning Principles
  • Travel Demand Modeling Theory and Principles
  • Traffic Engineering and Transportation Planning Principles and Tools
  • Knowledge of TransCAD, Synchro, SimTraffic, and ArcMap
Education: Bachelors degree from an accredited college or university with major course work in civil engineering or a related field. 
Licenses and Certificates: Professional Engineer's license preferred or ability to obtain within 1 year.  Possession of or ability to obtain a valid Driver's License.
