Job Description

The Materials Manager is primarily responsible for the daily activities of the materials and purchasing functions.  They will review purchasing decisions, orders, and vendor contracts.  Oversees the correct material inventory levels and line stocking at point of use in a manufacturing environment and plans accordingly. Materials Manager position verifies the receipt of items and authorizes payment.  This position reports to the General Manager; however, expect to be a resource to other department managers as needed to support the operations. 

Position Responsibilities:

  • Maintain records of goods ordered and received
  • Lead implementation of Lean: 5s, Kanban, and JIT
  • Implement inventory control initiatives
  • Maintain efficient inventory levels
  • Assure material is available at point of use
  • Continually improve purchasing methods, inventory and drive down costs
  • Represent company in negotiating contracts and formulating policies with suppliers
  • Locate vendors of materials, equipment, or supplies and sources and determine product availability, terms of sales, lead times and pricing through interviews
  • Prepare and process requisitions and purchase orders for materials, supplies, services, and equipment at the most competitive price
  • Direct and coordinate activities of personnel engaged in buying, selling, and distributing materials, equipment, machinery, and supplies
  • Interview and hire staff and oversee staff training
  • Develop and implement purchasing and contract management instructions, policies, and procedures
  • Participate in the development of specification of equipment, products, and substitute materials
  • Analyze market and delivery systems to assess present and future material availability
  • Resolve vendor or contractor grievances and claims against suppliers
  • Manage and control the company's external suppliers with particular emphasis on the purchase of materials, subassemblies, and finished parts for production
  • Identify new supplier and negotiate supply agreements where appropriate, including discount structures, volume rebates, and terms
  • Foster close working relationships with associates in Sales, Scheduling, Engineering, Production and Quality
  • Perform other job-related duties as assigned

Required Skills and Experience:

  • Bachelor's Degree in Materials Management or Purchasing
  • 5 years of related experience (3 of which are in management)
  • APICS-CPIM Certification Preferred
  • Strong Knowledge of MRP Systems
  • Excellent knowledge of warehouse, material inventory control, material stocking and point of application, cycle counts, Kanban, and JIT
  • Strong manufacturing experience with the willingness to work out in the plant
  • Ability to quantify and explain purchasing savings
  • Lean Manufacturing
  • Computer proficiency, including Microsoft Products
